Our Mex 1 Sessions are officially back in action. Check out below for our next announcement and some recaps from our most recent shows!

What are the Mex 1 Sessions?

Carolina Studios, Ear for Music and Mex 1 Sullivan’s Island have teamed up to produce a set of extremely intimate and exciting shows, featuring local bands that have had a huge impact on Charleston’s music scene and beyond. The Mex 1 Sessions allow artists and fans the opportunity to connect on a personal level while supporting a great cause and enjoying some of the food and bev that makes Charleston nightlife what it is today.

List of past performers, from most recent:

  • Occasional Milkshake
  • Kevn Kinney (of Drivin n Cryin)
  • Jump Castle Riot
  • Bret Bollinger (of Pepper)
  • Blue Dogs
  • Jupiter Coyote
  • Stop Light Observations
  • Sol Driven Train

For our first Mex 1 Session of 2019, we brought in Kevn Kinney of Drivin’ N’ Cryin’. Though he started off solo, the stage was soon filled by our very own Mark Bryan, Jay Van Raalte from Jump Castle Riot, Tim Nielsen, and Scottie Frier. Needless to say it turned into a jam session.

Exclusive Artist Info:

One of our instructors got an exclusive interview with Jay Van Raalte, the lead guitarist of Jump Castle Riot and Charleston City Paper's Guitarist of the Year. Let's see what she has to say!

Jay and I sat down at Kudu on Vanderhorst to talk about what was in the works for April’s Mex 1 Session. Jay is a Sophomore at the College of Charleston studying Math with a minor in Geology, but she’s also a full-time touring musician. Even though Jay said it was a pretty laid back week, she described the life of a musician and student as a juggling act, but continued with exactly what keeps her going. “You’ve really gotta love what you’re doing,” Jay said, “but it’s always been my dream to just jump in a van with my three best friends and hit the road.”

Jay took a minute to think about exactly what is so special about the Mex 1 Sessions, and we couldn’t agree more. She remembers her own experiences as a young musician on the Carolina Studios bus and how it bridged the gap between music and technology for her. Jump Castle Riot has been involved with bands like Drivin’ and Cryin’ and Stop Light Observations, two legendary Charleston bands, and she cites their involvement with the Mex 1 Sessions as one of the most exciting parts.

The band performs regularly at Mex 1, and they’ve performed at venues like the Charleston Music Hall and the Royal American alongside Charleston favorites, but they had something new to bring to the Mex 1 Sessions. The band premiered the new music video for their song “For You,” directed by Grey Gowder, which is the band’s first ever music video. “We know that the people at this show are some of our real fans, so we want to bring them something fresh this time. It’ll be a really intimate performance, but we’ll still rock their faces off.” Not only did JCR perform some new songs for us, but they also played some special covers, something that they’re known for.
